University of Alberta PhD Candidate Camille Warbington is studying the ecology of sitatunga in Uganda. The sitatunga is considered a prize for sportsmen and wildlife enthusiast alike due to its secretive lifestyle and the inaccessible habitat where it lives - in papyrus marshes and swamps of central and southern Africa. With very little previous research on the sitatunga, Camille's plan is to help determine population size, diversity, and movement of the sitatunga. This is valuable information, as Uganda wants to have a sustainable hunt.  Safari companies in Uganda share a portion of their hunting profits with the landowners where an animal is harvested, which helps the local economy and also helps discourage poaching. The added benefit is to also keep the areas clean and natural, which encourages sitatunga populations to stay. It’s a win-win for everyone involved - the proper management of sitatunga will help Ugandans, sportsmen, wildlife enthusiasts, conservationists and the wetland habitat sitatunga use.

Wildlife Discoveries wants to take you on the journey as well-
